Oxford House Washington State Association

oxford house

Like many of the modern buildings on this list, it aims to be both new and reflective of the old – its circular shape echoing Oxford buildings like the Radcliffe Camera and the Sheldonian Theatre. It follows the traditional college layout, itself based on medieval Catholic monasteries, with its buildings arranged around a central quadrangle. But from Islamic architecture it adds a 35m minaret and dome for its prayer hall, not to mention marble elaborately carved with Islamic verses. The end result is a building that blends in with Oxford’s traditional architecture, but gives it an undeniably Islamic flavour – representing the union of Eastern and Western traditions that the Centre for Islamic Studies aims to achieve. It’s also a fascinating depiction of how the medieval colleges of the University of Oxford might have looked had they be founded in an Islamic tradition, rather than a Christian one.

Self-run, Self-supporting Addiction Recovery Homes

Equal Expense Shared (EES) is generally between 80 and 160 dollars a week and includes utilities. Weekly business meetings are mandatory to discuss any issues that the house may be facing. It is at these meetings that checks are written for bills and residents are made aware of where they stand financially.

How much does it cost?

If you were visiting Oxford in the 14th century, this building wouldn’t have struck you as anything out of the ordinary; its architecture is quite typical for British cities at the time. It’s also worth noting the way that the building becomes gradually wider with every storey; this was a way of maximising floor space without needing to buy more land. In some buildings of this kind on narrow streets, the overhang was considerable enough that householders could reach out of a top-floor window and shake hands with their neighbours across the road. In 1122, the Priory of St Frideswide was established on the site; what is now Christ Church Cathedral was in the late 12th century as their place of worship. In 1522, the priory was taken over by Thomas Wolsey, who planned to knock down the church and replace it with a new chapel as part of his new Cardinal College. But with Wolsey’s fall from grace, the college was taken over by Henry VIII, who named it Christ Church, and the church was retained as the cathedral of the diocese of Oxford, as well as the chapel of the new college.

Resident Training

In the years between 1975 and 1988, eighteen Houses were established by and for recovering individuals. The first Oxford House was started in 1975 in Silver Springs MD by a group of recovering alcoholics/addicts who were living in a halfway house that was closing down. Worried that they would have to leave and not have a safe place to go, they decided to rent a house together and hold each other accountable to staying sober. Within six months they had enough money saved to open a second house, to meet the need for more beds. With the help of Federal and State programs this growth has continued and today there are Oxford Houses in almost every state, and in several countries.

Outside of the university, a major recent building project for Oxford city was the redevelopment of the Westgate Shopping Centre, formerly housed in a somewhat tired-looking 1970s building. Planned to accommodate 15 million visitors every year, the new shopping centre cost £500m to build and took the collaborative efforts of 6 architectural firms. Using the contact information for the house you’ve chosen, call and set up an interview. Each house conducts its own interviews and votes on admitting new members. The first North Carolina Oxford Houses were established in Durham and Asheville, NC.

Individuals living in a house are expected to participate in a recovery program in the community during their residence. There is no official minimum time limit for acceptance, but generally an individual comes into an Oxford House following a 14 to 28 day rehabilitation program, or at least a detoxification period. A strong contender for the oldest Oxford college (the other two disputing that title are Balliol and University College), Merton College was established in the 1260s. Building of the hall, the chapel, the library and Mob Quad, which provides accommodation for students, began in the 1270s – making Mob Quad probably the oldest quadrangle in Oxford. It’s so old, it doesn’t even have chimneys; these were not in widespread use in English buildings until the 16th century.

In some states, the start-up revolving loan fund has turned over many times enabling the development of strong statewide networks of Oxford Houses. For example, in Washington State the original $100,000 start-up loan fund has loaned out more than $700,000 as houses repaid their loans. The money is used over and over again with the result that the state has 179 houses with 1,464 recovery beds. Oxford Houses are self-run, self-supported recovery homes for same sexed individuals.

DePaul University Research on Oxford House

The slightly disconcerting words come from Dorothy Sayers, who celebrated Oxford in her novel Gaudy Night, and which are fitting for a college dedicated to mature students. For a picture of the town side of medieval Oxford – rather than the gown – you can’t do much better than Cornmarket Street. This timber-framed building was built in the late 14th century for a wine merchant who ran it as the New Inn. It was one of many inns clustered into this area of central Oxford, and what remains is about half of the original inn, which would have been structured around a central courtyard. What you see there today is partly the original building, and partly a very sympathetic restoration funded by Jesus College in the 1980s. Rents vary according to the size and location of the House, ranging from $95 to $110 per week, which covers all household expenses except food.

These homes are typically found in quiet, nice neighborhoods and offer a drug and alcohol free living environment for those in early recovery. Individuals living in an Oxford House learn or relearn values, responsible behavior and slowly, but surely, develop long-term behavior to assure comfortable sobriety forever. Some individuals live in Oxford Houses a few months, others, for many years.

Together, these individuals develop each Oxford House into a place to learn to live a responsible life without the use of alcohol and drugs. The first Oxford House was established in 1975 in Silver Spring, Maryland. From the beginning the group rejected ownership of any property and continues to rent – not purchase – single-family houses in good neighborhoods to establish new Oxford Houses.

We maintain a toll free hotline reporting towns and phone numbers of Oxford Houses with vacancies. Call the house you are interested in directly to find out about vacancies, or be put on a waiting list. Arrange for an interview with the current House members, who will vote on your acceptance.

The Stunning Architecture of Oxford: 5 of the Oldest Buildings and 5 of the Newest

After the interview, the house members will decide if you’ll be allowed to move in by taking a vote. It is preferred that Individuals complete a treatment program, depending on what treatment options are available in that area and be drug and alcohol free for 14 days or more (longer is preferred) at the time of application. They must also be willing to accept the house rules and expectations, and be able to pay their share of the expenses. Rent and the various utilities paid by residents vary by location, but the cost of living in an Oxford House is usually no more than what it would cost to live elsewhere. Plus, this option may actually be cheaper than other housing environments given the fact that residents split the household costs among several residents. If you want to know what it felt like to be a student in medieval Oxford, then visiting Merton College is about as close as you can get in the present day.

Recovery. Responsibility. Replication.

Each group obtains a Charter from Oxford House Inc., which is the umbrella organization for the international network of individual Oxford Houses. Oxford Houses of Texas, established in 1990, is a state-wide network of addiction recovery homes chartered by Oxford House, Inc., the 501c3 umbrella corporation. Each Oxford House operates democratically, pays its own bills, and expels any member who returns to drinking alcohol or using drugs. Large houses are rented and located in nice neighborhoods giving anywhere from 6 to 15 same-gender individuals a safe, supportive place to call home. The success of Oxford House is well documented and has resulted in the inclusion of the Oxford House Model into the SAMSHA National Registry of Evidence Based Programs and Practices (NREPP). Having time to become comfortable in sobriety might be the single most important part of the Oxford House success story.

Life Skills

Every architectural period from the Anglo-Saxons onwards is represented somewhere in Oxford. Oxford is now nearly as much a thriving hub for innovative and striking modern architecture as it is a destination where you can see the glorious buildings of the past, beautifully preserved. If you join us in our Oxford Summer Architecture Programme, you’ll have the chance to learn all about architecture throughout history to the present day.

Call, Apply, Interview

An Oxford house provides recovering addicts a safe, substance-free place to live. Individuals who are interested in living in an Oxford House should call the house of their choice to see if there are any vacancies, If there are vacancies, an interview will be scheduled. Eighty percent of the house members must vote to accept the applicant as a roommate.

The FY2021 Annual Report provides an overview of the work of Oxford House, Inc. What happens when you add elements of classical Islamic architecture to a traditional Oxford college? The Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, designed by Professor Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil, is one possible answer to that question. Many college chapels are impressive, but the Oxford college of Christ Church has perhaps the most stunning of them all, and it comes with a storied past as well. It goes all the way back to St Frideswide, the patron saint of Oxford, an Anglo-Saxon princess who, the story goes, forswore marriage in order to found a convent despite the wishes of the king who sought to marry her.

Implementation of Effective Outreach

Oxford Houses of North Carolina, established in 1991, is a statewide network of recovery residences, chartered by Oxford House, Inc., the 501(c)(3) umbrella corporation. Oxford Houses are peer-driven, democratically run, and self-supported group residences for individuals in recovery from a substance use disorder. Currently, the network of Oxford Houses is over 3,300 in the United States. To sustain growth and to assure that all houses stay on track, Oxford House World Services organize houses into mutually supportive local chapters and state associations – all democratically self-run and self-supported. Moreover, in 1999, Oxford House held its first annual World Convention where residents and alumni meet every year to learn more about addiction and the ways and means to expand the number of Oxford Houses. In its simplest form, an Oxford House describes a democratically run, self-supporting and drug free home.

Though one of England’s smallest cathedrals, it’s still a stunning example of late Norman architecture. Oxford’s other Saxon tower is the tower of the church of St Michael at the North Gate. From the fact that this church was once by the North Gate in the city walls, and St George’s Tower by the West Gate, it’s possible to see just how small the city boundaries once were.

As of March 2022, there are 287 houses in North Carolina, with locations statewide. With an average of 8 beds per house, there are more than 2,200 available beds across the state. Individuals typically enter an Oxford House after completing a treatment program or reentering from a correctional setting. Oxford House offers a supportive way of living and opportunities to learn life skills in a clean and sober environment. This enabled the national board to recruit experienced outside Directors to compliment the residents and alumni making up the democratic self-run organization. Each House represents a remarkably effective and low cost method of preventing relapse. This was the purpose of the first Oxford House established in 1975, and this purpose is served, day by day, house after house, in each of over 2000 houses in the United States today.

Using this cost-effective method to improve the chances of recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction, may be the best way to show the community that recovery works and that recovering individuals can become model citizens. Moreover, Oxford House World Services supervised legal actions throughout the country to resolve civil rights with respect to zoning restrictions and the NIMBY problem. In 1995, the United States Supreme Court considered the rights of recovering individuals to rent houses in areas zoned for single-family residence. In its decision in City of Edmonds, WA v. What to order from the Rudis Seagrill menu on Carnival cruises

The cruise line will automatically cancel existing main dining room reservations already booked for cruises departing after September 14, 2024, except for those on Sun Princess, the line’s newest ship. The video does not confirm which cruise ship the guest was sailing on, but it is a Carnival Cruise Line vessel. While the date of the filming is unknown, one clue is found in the price of the 1.5-liter bottle.

The vessel offers weeklong Caribbean voyages on a regular rotation from its home port in Galveston, Texas, meaning you'll find a healthy dose of Texas-style fun on board (more on that later). In fact, Carnival is so dedicated to keeping the ship in the Lone Star State that it had a Texas star painted on the ship's hull. The same inclusions applied at Canal Grande, but guests could order drinks like specialty coffees and other beverages right from their table (and the eatery had an extensive wine list). I did some tableside world traveling and got a mixed greens salad, sweet and sour shrimp and tiramisu. The fried rice that came with my shrimp entree was a tad overcooked, but I enjoyed the meal otherwise.

What is the sit-down restaurant experience like at Carnival Venezia?

Carnival Cruise Line just debuted its newest mega-ship, Carnival Celebration - and there's more to eat onboard than you can even imagine. But you might be overwhelmed by the amount of choices you have on the ship. In fact, Carnival Horizon — one of the line’s Vista-class of ships — has more than a dozen places to eat something on the ship. You can't miss the aromas wafting from this Indian food station, where dishes like tandoori chicken and beef kebabs are cooked at over 1,000 degrees in a traditional clay oven. This Key West, Florida-inspired pub is the spot for a round of trivia or foosball, brews and tunes.

Should you go to the buffet or the main dining room on a cruise? I tried both.

But you should know that while you are already being charged gratuity for dining at free restaurants (the charges automatically included at the of the cruise), you have to pay extra charges for dining at the specialty dining venues. Reservations are highly recommended for specialty restaurants, as these locations can book up in advance. You can make reservations online up to 48 hours before your cruise by visiting the "Manage My Booking/Cruise Manager" section of Carnival.com, at which time you'll also pay the cover charge for the restaurant. When hunger calls at odd hours of the night or you're craving a meal from the comfort of your balcony, you can access 24-hour room service on your Carnival cruise ship. While room service is generally only available for a cost, Carnival does offer free continental breakfast delivery to your room from 6 to 10 a.m. If you're planning your next cruise and want to know which Carnival restaurants to expect on board, you've come to the right place.

Card Type

In line with Carnival's two-entree limit in the main dining room, guests now have to pay for any additional lobster past the first two entrees. Guy’s Pig & Anchor BBQOne of the most popular specialty restaurants on Carnival ships has to be Guy’s Pig & Anchor BBQ. For lunch you can eat for free, but in the evenings they charge for meals. You can get most of your smoked meat favorites, including brisket, chicken, pulled pork and even ribs.

What’s the Dress Code at Carnival’s Restaurants?

Located in Celebration Central, Bonsai has a separate area for its sushi restaurant and teppanyaki grills. Although we aren’t fans of sushi or fish, we were excited to have a teppanyaki experience at sea. Again, everything was a slam dunk that we ordered from Emeril’s, especially the beignets, which were to-die-for. These are served with chocolate and strawberry sauces; I think these could be delicious for any meal at Emeril's, not just breakfast. The Breakfast Bacon Po-Boy was incredibly delicious; it was cheesy, well-seasoned and served on a warm baguette. It was a large serving as well considering the $6 price and served with hand-cut chips.

Lido Marketplace

The atmosphere is usually a little darker and more intimate, making it ideal for “date night.” During the day you can actually eat pasta here for no charge. In the evening it turns into a specialty Italian restaurant and serves a full menu. That includes everything from meatballs to spaghetti to chicken parm, along with some more unique dishes porcini rubbed beef short ribs.

A FEW OF OUR TOP DINING CHOICES

Another excellent dinner during my voyage occurred at Rudi's Seagrill (Deck 8), an upscale seafood restaurant named for chef and pop artist Rudi Sodamin. The lobster macaroni and cheese was the perfect indulgence to start my meal, and I followed it up with a delicious crab cake. Other venues in the area include the Marina Bar for cocktails and coffee, complimentary Italian restaurant Cucina del Capitano and for-fee seafood eatery Rudi's Seagrill, created by food pop artist chef Rudi Sodamin. The eatery serves a wide range of cuisine, and as someone who struggles with mealtime indecision, it was hard to pick. As I made my way along one of several counters, I served myself jambalaya and cornmeal-crusted chicken. Carnival Cruise Line’s newest ship, Carnival Venezia, marks some culinary firsts for the line.

carnival cruise restaurant

In a first for us, we also pre-booked an evening dinner to be enjoyed at Bonsai Teppanyaki for $38 per person. The main event was our entree course, in which we chose to try the broiled filet and roasted chicken. Although the steak temperature was cooked perfectly, the lingering broil taste left a little to be desired. Both of us opted to choose the heritage berkshire pork belly for an appetizer, which was tasty and served with warm bread on the side. In all honesty, I absolutely love a tender, juicy steak so I was very excited to see how Fahrenheit 555 compared to other steakhouses - both on land and at sea.

If you don’t have a reservation at a restaurant, you can try to eat anyway. While it might seem that you need to get all fancied up to go to a specialty restaurant, that’s not always the case. Higher-end venues like the steakhouse or Chef’s Table follow the ship’s dress code for the evening. Bonsai TeppanyakiWhile it’s not on many ships (just Carnival Horizon, Panorama, and Mardi Gras include it), Bonsai Teppanyaki makes a memorable meal. It’s hibachi-style where the chef performs a show for an entire table while also cooking a delicious meal. The fare is Asian-themed, including your choice of meat (or tofu) cooked up with fried rice and stir-fry.

It is impossible to determine where the image was taken, so the identity of the cruise ship and cruise line is unknown. The line apologized for the changes to the loyalty program benefits. The 11 Best Alaska Cruise Excursions in 2024, From Whale Watching to Glacier Tours

norwegian cruise line alaska excursions

If you just stay in the towns and explore on your own, you'll miss a big part of what Alaska is all about. But since dog sledding is a winter activity, cruise ship visitors in the early days never had a chance to experience it. That all changed when helicopters became readily available to travelers.

Explore Alaska

After you touch down, you'll get a quick lesson from seasoned Iditarod racers about how to command your huskies before taking the reins yourself. Listen to the enthusiastic yips and howls of your sled dogs and feel the icy wind in your face as you speed through the awe-inspiring snowy landscape. The cruise line hasn't posted any excursions yet, and I am trying to get an idea of what's available and what it costs. The Juneau-Douglas City Museum sits on the site where Alaska officially became a state.

Wilderness River Adventure

After about an hour in the water, you'll head back to the dive shop, where a hot beverage caps a perfect day. Like Whittier (farther below), Seward is most often used as an embarkation and debarkation port. As such, this is an excursion that's also limited to participants who are sailing on back-to-back cruises to/from Seward if you buy through the line. It's also open to those who are ending their sailing in Seward with a late-night flight out of nearby Anchorage (or with an overnight stay in the city), in which case the tour includes an airport transfer, too. Unlike Prince William Sound in Whittier, note that those with motion sickness should take precautions since the Resurrection Bay waters can be a bit choppy. You'll need to buy a one-day fishing license from the captain of the small boat for $15 cash, as required by Alaska law.

Explore The Wilderness Of Alaska With Norwegian Cruise Line

Expert-led hikes take you deep into the breathtaking beauty of the backcountry of one of Alaska's most remote national parks. Find your perfect Alaska cruise with NCL, whether it be action-packed wilderness adventures or shore excursions to quaint villages. Witness whales breaching the surface, marvel at stunning glaciers, and take in breathtaking views on board custom-built ships designed to showcase Alaska’s natural beauty. Holland America Line serves sustainable wild Alaskan seafood, with park rangers and local Indigenous tribe members often boarding for presentations.

Breathtaking Excursions Your Alaska Cruise Offers

A popular tour destination on cruise itineraries, Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve wows with its icy wilderness and grand glaciers in southeastern Alaska. Glaciers of note include the park's largest tidewater glacier, John Hopkins; the elongated 21-mile Margerie; and the rapidly receding Muir. The park also is home to an amazing world of marine life, including humpback whales, sea otters, giant Pacific octopuses and harbor porpoises. An array of species resides on land, from brown and black bears to moose, mountain goats, wolves and prickly porcupines, while the bird variety includes bald eagles, tufted puffins and trumpeter swans. Deep fjords, icy glaciers, and the shimmering lights of the aurora borealis... Alaska is home to some of the world’s most spectacular natural treasures.

We work with reputable, local tour operators to offer you a wide variety of excursions to choose from, in every port you’ll visit. Animal lovers of every age relish visiting the Kroschel Wildlife Refuge in Haines, a popular excursion among Royal Caribbean Alaska cruise passengers. It’s also interactive; get close for photos and learn how the refuge protects these animals. For those with a hefty bankroll, this might be the ultimate Alaska shore excursion. Combining helicopter flightseeing over the seemingly endless Juneau Icefield with a landing on a glacier for dog sledding, it hits two of Alaska's most iconic experiences.

Guests will also have exclusive keycard access to the Studio Lounge, where they can have a drink and mingle with other solo travellers. And, if you're going to do a floatplane ride, there's nowhere better than in Ketchikan.

Lunch is served in a heated pavilion, and staff also stoke a roaring campfire to help you beat the chill and relax. In Wrangell, sign up for Anan Creek Bear Viewing and Photography, joining the expedition team bear expert and a photography specialist for this rousing small-group bear-viewing experience. Travel by boat to the Anan Estuary and Wildlife Observatory in the Tongass National Forest (Anan Creek has Southeast Alaska’s largest pink salmon run) and climb to the observation deck overlooking cascading waterfalls.

A Seward Glacier Cruise: Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise and Alaska SeaLife Center

Alaska is a place where you may want to budget almost as much per person for your shore excursions as you do for your cabin. There are some cruise destinations — Barcelona, for instance, or Venice — where you really don't need to sign up for shore excursions. You can just walk off the ship and head to the major attractions on your own. During your voyage on the calm waters of the Inside Passage, keep your eyes open for glimpses of whales, porpoises, seals, and other marine creatures. Listen to action-packed stories of life on the Bering Sea and get an up-close look at the catch of the day.

Gaze out windows, eying otherworldly views of the Placer River Valley and soaring peaks of Spencer Glacier, while enjoying a box lunch. Then meet guides to go rafting, paddling between dramatic icebergs and down the serene and scenic Placer River. To get the most out of an Alaska cruise, you'll want to sign up for a tour in most if not all of the ports you visit. You'll be looking for the best Alaska shore excursions that get you out into the Alaska backcountry. Depending on the booking situation, various excursions are also offered in German, Spanish, French, Italian or Russian (minimum number of 30 participants). Please see the detailed information for your shore excursion on board.

History buffs can add a visit to Liarsville, a re-created gold rush camp complete with Vaudeville entertainment and a salmon bake. Begin with an aerial overview of Misty Fjords National Monument and those granite cliffs. Just beyond is a series of small, remote mountain lakes that would be next to impossible to reach on foot. Your pilot picks out one of the lakes, lands the floatplane, and turns off the engine.

I should also be clear that the towns themselves aren't devoid of attractions. While I highly encourage Alaska-bound cruisers to get out into the wilderness, there are plenty of worthwhile things to do in each of the main port towns. The best way for nature lovers in search of rustic elegance to experience Denali and the heart of Alaska's wilderness. With over 27,000 glaciers, Alaska is one of the best places to see these majestic pieces of nature up close.

Visit the gift shop, restaurant, live bald eagle display, and nature center. Check out the wildlife viewing platforms and follow the self-guided trail marked by Native totemic carvings for access to upper alpine hiking area. You'll stop off at a shoreline camp to enjoy a snack over an open fire. When you’re finished, you’ll go on a short walk through a dramatic old-growth forest. Experience kayaking in Alaska the way it should be — away from the crowds — with these unique Ketchikan paddling tours offered by Alaska Kayak Company.

Each restaurant serves a wide variety of delicious cuisine, consisting of specially curated modern and classic dishes made with the freshest ingredients. The Oceanview and Inside Staterooms can accommodate up to five and four guests respectively, ideal for active travellers planning on spending their holiday dining, playing and enjoying entertainment. But, also get ready for lovely views of glacier-carved fjords, cliffs and rock walls jutting thousands of feet out of the ocean. The whole thing is covered with temperate rainforests and features huge waterfalls (thanks to all that rain). Explore Alaska as the mountain climbers do with an overnight stay in the quaint community of Talkeetna. Located 60 miles from the base of Mt. Denali, this tour gives you the best possible opportunity to see the largest mountain in North America from two distinctly different views.

Sip a cocktail with spectacular views from the coziest spot at Spinnaker Lounge or take a dip in one of five luxurious hot tubs. Whichever ship you choose, Alaska and the vacation of a lifetime await. Pack Creek Bear Tours offers fully guided adventures to Admiralty Island or Chichagof Island, each home to more than 1,500 brown bears!

After a beautiful 20- or 25-minute floatplane ride, you’ll land on a remote beach. Take a short walk to the bear-viewing area, where you can watch these magnificent creatures for hours in their natural environment. The Sitka, Alaska Raptor Center is home to view birds of prey, including bald eagles, up close. Sitka is also noteworthy among Alaska towns for its strong Russian and Tlingit heritage. This tour combines the work done at the raptor center with Sitka's cultural side. The Scenic Train and Rafting excursion delivers an inspired eight-hour shore tour, beginning with a train ride on the Alaskan Railroad through the vast wilderness.
